Why Schools Don’t Teach Memory Skills

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Schools treat memory skills like they do study skills. It’s every student for themselves.

Now, that’s not to say teachers avoid the topic altogether. There are many teachers that try to incorporate memory skills into particular units of study. For example, everyone learned the order of operations using some form of mnemonic. I learned “Please excuse my Dear Aunt Sally.” (Parenthesis, Exponents, multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction).

Yet, very few teachers present the technique as a memory skill. On the contrary, students simply remember it as a way to recall that math fact. Just as they learned other techniques to remember the planets, or the presidents. (more…)

Schools don’t teach memory skills…It’s up to you to learn

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Don’t believe me? Well, did you learn how to process information quickly and easily in school? The answer, unfortunately, is no. Schools don’t take the time to show us how to neatly place all those facts and figures into our brains in a way that will make it easy to remember later. (more…)

Memory skills that don’t fade away

Monday, October 29th, 2007

For many people, memory ability comes and go. If you don’t use it you lose it. Well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, did you expect it to be otherwise?

Think about it for a minute. If you bust you butt to learn the guitar, then don’t play it for weeks, do you think you’re going to play it as well? It’s the same with learning Memory Skills. Once you develop some great techniques that prove their effectiveness, why let them sit to the side unused?

It’s like watering a plant and watching it grow and then suddenly not watering it anymore. It will die and so will memory skills if you don’t use them and apply them whenever you can.

With that said, learning Memory Skills is simple. Your problem is no one has ever shown you how to remember information quickly and easily. Your school was the place but they didn’t (and they still don’t).

You approach all memory situations with the same, “I can’t remember this” mentality that you’ve always had. And you get the same results.

So here’s the deal. You can take a look at Memory Skills Made Easy, or another resource. Just find one, learn the skills and use them. That’s the key to a powerful memory.
