Do You Hate To Memorize?
If you’re old enough to be an adult, then you have a definite feeling towards memorization. In most cases, it’s a bad feeling. Don’t worry, I feel the same way.
Unfortunately for us, we were trained in the “keep repeating it until it sticks” method of remembering. A few years of that and you run from memorizing like it was the plague. No one seemed to listen when you told them that things weren’t sticking no matter how many times you repeated it. Their response was generally, “You’re not trying!”
Well, if you have kids who are struggling with their ability to remember information, you need to be careful. It is not genetic so don’t play that card. Your past troubles have little or nothing to do with your child’s troubles.
It’s also not that they’re not trying, although I’m sure you already know that.
The problem they have is the problem you and I had. No one showed us how to take in information and retain it. If we had known, our lives would have been a lot less stressful at study time. In fact, our lives now would be less stressful.
I’m lucky because someone showed me in college how to use memory skills and I’ve used them ever since. My kids use them too. And, needless to say, I recommend you use them as well.
You see, remembering information is a combination of understanding it and then finding a way to hold onto it until you need it. Now, the understanding part is as much a responsibility of the teacher as it is the student. But the retaining part is almost exclusively the student’s responsibility.
In other words, you need to help your child learn memory skills now if you want them to have a successful learning experience. You can find tips on memory skills on the internet, in bookstores and at the library. Just find them and help your child learn them. And while you’re at it, learn some yourself. Just don’t get mad that you learned some really easy tips when it was too late. After all, it’s never too late!
